About the Waitomo Area

Otorohanga and Te Kuiti are nearby and are friendly country towns with, shopping and dining experiences. On the west Coast are the charming seaside villages of Kawhia, Marokopa and Mokau which all have stunning beaches. Waitomo Caves and the “King Country” are in the central western North Island, south of Auckland & Hamilton and west of Rotorua & Taupo. Auckland is less than a 3 hour drive, Hamilton 1 hour, Rotorua & Taupo just over 2 hours.

Undulating green fields, tumbling waterfalls, spectacular rural vistas and, of course, its world renowned limestone formations and cave systems make Waitomo a destination like no other. 30 million years ago the entire Waitomo region lay far beneath the sea. Today, both above and below ground, it stands as a revealing testament to a landmark period in New Zealand’s and the world’s natural history.

It is also a region that offers a multitude of recreational sightseeing and tourist attractions. So much so, that it’s virtually impossible to take it all in over just one day. So take two or even a few days and discover Waitomo at your own pace.

Glowworm Caves

Waitomo is world famous for its glowworm caves, Black Water Rafting, cave abseiling (rappelling), cave eco-tours and landscapes.

Waitomo being in the heart of the King Country is an adventure wonderland easily reached from Auckland, Rotorua and Taupo.
